My research interests lie primarily in the
development of mathematical methodologies and computational tools for tackling multiscale problems in
systems biology. I am also interested in the application of these tools to specific well-defined biological
problems. Particular examples include:
- Multiscale modelling of colonic crypt homeostasis and carcinogenesis
- Multiscale modelling of the effect of contact inhibition and nutrient deprivation in monolayer and
spheroid cell cultures
- Modelling pH regulation in normal tissues and bioenergetic changes and tumours
- Development of Chaste (Cancer, Heart and Soft Tissue Environment), a general framework for the
simulation of multi-scale problems arising in systems biology
- Comparison of ordinary differential equation and Boolean network approaches to modelling gene
regulatory networks
- Mathematical modelling of early surface colonisation and bacterial biofilm formation
