Up until the end of 2010, I was a university lecturer in mathematics (with the title of Professor of Mathematics) and a tutorial fellow of Wadham College. I was also Chairman of Mathematics. Thereafter I served briefly as Acting Head of the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Division, and then as Deputy Head. I am now President of the Clay Mathematics Institute and a Senior Research Fellow of Wadham College.

I was an undergraduate at Oxford, and returned in 1977 after completing a Ph.D in the Mathematics Department at King's College, London (under the supervision of F A E Pirani) and spending a brief period as a postdoc in the Physics Department at Princeton, working for J A Wheeler. I was Treasurer of the London Mathematical Society until 2009.
