MATH 3TP3 Writing Project:
- Each student in the class will be expected to submit an essay on
some topic related to the course material. The essay should not be a
technical document that merely produces the proof of some theorem.
Ideally, it will explore the connection between some of the material covered
in the course (logic, truth, provability, computability etc.) with some other branch
of mathematics, computer science, philosophy, psychology, history, etc, or
with popular culture. The essay could be historical in nature, for
example, covering the motivation and/or circumstances leading up to the proof
of the First Incompleteness Theorem or the development of the formal notion of
an algorithm.
- The course text provides an excellent source for topics, ideas,
and material for this project.
- You should also consult the course reading list and/or the
world wide web for ideas and topics. I may also be able to provide
assistance with this.
- Once you have settled on a topic, please send me an email briefly
describing your choice.
- Not counting the bibliography, the essay should contain
approximately 700 words.
- All sources used in your essay should be properly referenced.
- Essays should be submitted in an open electronic format, say in
open document format (.odt), pdf, ps, html, commented source code, plaintext,
etc.
Deadlines:
- Monday, November 12: email me an essay topic.
- Monday, December 3: email me an essay.
