Welcome to the Homepage for
Bridson's Course, HT 2014
Geometry and Decision Problems
Lecturer: Prof. Martin R Bridson, Room N3.19, Andrew Wiles Building
All Lectures Take Place in C? at Mathematical Institute (AWB)
-
Wed 10:00--11:00; Thurs 10:00--11:00
Lectures begin Wednesday 22 January
Required Background:
This should be accessible to all graduate students. You should know what a free group is, and a group presentation,
but not much more than that. (Familiarity with amalgamated free products
and HNN extensions
is helpful, but I'll include what's needed in the lectures, at least formally.
Likewise for semi-direct products, etc.)
You should be familiar with the basic objects of topology
(cell complex, fundamental group, manifold).
A nodding acquaintence with
Riemannian manifolds and bundles will suffice. At times I will talk about (co)homology
of groups and spaces, but the discussion will be largely self-contained.

This is probably too much for 16 lectures, and I will be guided by the
audience if choices of topic are necessary.
