Chapter 5
Heat transfer
The heat equation is derived and its basic properties outlined:
fundamental solution, solution by separation of variables, and other
more exotic phenomena are discussed: blow up (thermal runaway for
exponential source terms), degeneracy for nonlinear diffusion and the
resultant compactness of spreading solutions and their finite travel
speed; and Stefan problems, with solutions at low and high St.
