Kovalevskaya Grants for ECR from the UK
UK Kovalevskaya grants support graduate students, postdocs and other early career mathematicians who would like to attend the International Congress of Mathematicians ICM 2022 that will be held on 6-14 July 2022 in St. Petersburg, Russia. These grants are endorsed by the International Mathematical Union and funded through the ICM Local Organizing Committee.
What is covered: Kovalevskaya grants provide cover for all local expenses: registration fee waiver, accommodation for the duration of the congress, welcome reception, gala dinner, lunches, local transportation and the cultural program. All congress participants will be able to apply for a visa-free entry to Russia.
Eligibility:
-
Travel funding:
The Kovalevskaya grant only covers local expenses, so a condition for application is that researchers must have an alternative source of travel funding. There are two possible pathways for application:
- One can make a joint application for an LMS-EPSRC ICM Travel Grant and Kovalevskaya Grant. Successful applicants for the LMS-EPSRC grant will automatically also receive the Kovalevskaya grant.
-
Alternatively, it is possible to make a direct application for the Kovalevskaya grant. In this case applicants must provide proof of available travel funds.
- Career stage: Applicants should be Early Career Researchers, defined as within five years of PhD completion (excluding career breaks) and based at a UK institution. PhD students whose research would benefit from attending the meeting may also apply but their applications should be supported by their supervisor.
-
Area of research: Applicants should be working in any area of mathematics, mathematical physics or theoretical computer science.
Deadline: The application should be received by 15 October 2021.
How to apply:
- Pathway 1: Joint application for LMS-EPSRC ICM Travel Grants and Kovalevskaya grant. Carefully read all instructions here and fill in the application form. On this form, in field 9, you have to select "yes" in order to make a joint application, otherwise you will apply for travel funding only.
-
Pathway 2: Direct application for Kovalevskaya grant.
Send the following supporting documents to UK.Kovalevskaya.Grant@gmail.com.
-
Current CV including a list of publications.
-
Personal statement (at most one page long).
-
Graduate students should ask their advisor or anyone else closely familiar with their research to send a letter of recommendation. The letter should be sent directly to the email above by 15 October 2021. The subject line should contain the applicant's name.
-
Proof of travel funds. If you have a grant or a fellowship that could cover travel to St. Petersburg, please attach the grant award letter. If your travel will be covered by your institution travel funds or travel allowance, please attach a letter from the administration confirming that.
-
Optional: If you have already registered for the ICM 2022, please provide your registration number.
You can only apply via the LMS-EPSRC grant pathway or by making a direct application, but you cannot apply twice.
We especially welcome applications from women and underĀrepresented minorities. There will be onĀsite childcare during the congress.
The selection committee will review all applications and select grant recipients based on their scientific merit and academic potential. All decisions will be announced by 15 November.
Grant acceptance: All successful applicants will have to formally accept the grant. In order to do so, they will have to register on the ICM website, receive their ICM 2022 registration number and send it to UK.Kovalevskaya.Grant@gmail.com by 25 November. The selection committee has the right to rescind the award if the ICM registration number is not received by the deadline.
Please contact Dmitry Belyaev if you have any questions about the application process or eligibility criteria.
By applying to the Kovalavskaya grant you give the selection committee the right to store and process your personal information.
