For Part C messages, remove: oliver.holloway@mansfield.ox.ac.uk, bary.pradelski@maths.ox.ac.uk, kyprianou@maths.ox.ac.uk, (MFoCS), but might add the following (lectures but not classes): marcus.schofield@keble.ox.ac.uk, david.sims@mansfield.ox.ac.uk ------------------------------------------- [REMOVE Julia Erhard from the email list when I next email]. NOTE: Each week I should enter the attendance for Group 2 (and I might also need to enter the marks, if Frank no longer has access to the system for Group 2). Note classes are frozen in Week 4, so make sure to remove Martin Palmer by Wed of Week 4 if they want to be removed. Martin Palmer and Julia Erhard have asked to be removed from classes. Also remove them from my general emailings. So, probably it's suffficient just to double-check with Martin Palmer. Still to do: (1) Put in payment details (after getting reply from Helen, which I might check with Yan and Audrey). (2) Add Michael Swarbrick Jones to Group 3. (3) Add Laura as TA to Group 3. (4) If there is a problem with only 4 in a Group, then move Christina Kyprianou to Group 1, remove Frank as TA for Group 2, but ask him nevertheless to mark the work (still only 8 pieces of work), hand them over to me on Thursday with a mark sheet (and I'd then add the marks of the 3 Group 2 students on minerva). In that case, Frank would stay until 11.30 am to hand back work (in case they have questions about the marking) but then leave shortly after 11.30 am. For attendance, I can note attendance and give a copy to the TA, asking the TA to put attendance onto minerva. --------------- Email reminder to Frank and Laura about setting up boxes. Also, remind them about entering marks on Minerva, and about bringing along marks for each student for each question to the class, to give to me. N.B. Put Christina Kyprianou at 11.30 am on Minerva. --------------- From: Victor Flynn (lecturer of the Elliptic Curves course) To: All students currently taking Elliptic Curves I am emailing this to everyone who is currently in an Elliptic Curves intercollegiate class (I have put these on Minerva). All of these will take place on Thursdays in the Seminar Room on the ground floor of the house at 8 New College Lane. Each group will have seven classes, during Weeks 2 - 8, inclusive. The Seminar Room is the first door on your left immediately after you enter the main door of the house. If you find it locked and are unable to enter, then simply knock on the main door and I'll let you in; the seminar room is near the main door, and so your knocking should be clearly audible. STUDENTS IN EACH GROUP SHOULD HAND IN WORK TO THE TA OF THAT GROUP, EACH WEEK BY WEDNESDAY AT 12 noon. There will be boxes in the basement of the Mathematical Institute labelled with name of the lecture course (Elliptic Curves), the name of the TA and the group number. (where: the classes which begin at 10 am, 11.30 am and 1 pm are Groups 1,2,3, respectively). The first problem sheet is due this coming Wednesday at 12 noon, and the first classes will be this coming Thursday. All classes are officially one hour, however I have spaced them one-and-a-half hours apart, so that there is an extra half hour, in case any of you still have unresolved questions at the end of the hour. So, you might try to keep free the one-and-a-half hour period, beginning at the start time of your class. The classes (all on Thursdays) begin at: Group 1. 10 am. [Tutor: Victor Flynn. TA: Frank Gounelas] Group 2. 11.30 noon. [Tutor: Victor Flynn. TA: Frank Gounelas] Group 3. 1 pm. [Tutor: Victor Flynn. TA: Laura Schaposnik] Below are the students in each group. --------------------------------------------------- Group 1. Thursdays, beginning at 10 am. Tutor: Victor Flynn. TA: Frank Gounelas. Students: Michael Andrews, Oliver Holloway (MFoCS), Christina Kyprianou (MFoCS), Henry Martin, Bary Pradelski (MFoCS). --------------------------------------------------- Group 2. Thursdays, beginning at 11.30 am. Tutor: Victor Flynn. No TA. Students: Edward Border, Bernhard Elsner. --------------------------------------------------- Group 3. Thursdays, beginning at 1 pm. Tutor: Victor Flynn. TA: Laura Schaposnik. Students: Edward Jones, Neil Pais, Matthew Schofield, Benjamin Smith, Michael Swarbrick Jones. --------------------------------------------------- Julia Erhard. Sheet 1. A. Q1:A+, Q2:A+, Q3:A-, Q4:B+, Q5:--. [end of message] ----------------------------------------------------- Note: there are no MFoCS students in Group 2, so I might sometimes get a quick lunch break at 12.45 pm. Note also for Group 3, Laura is welcome to leave (if she wishes) before the MFoCS question. Note: in fact, Christina Kyprianou will come to the class at 10 am (I might officially keep her on Minerva in the 11.30 am class, but with her coming at 10 am; if so, tell her and Frank, and mention it's due to keeping each class at least 4 students; on the other hand, if someone in admin mentions they should have at least 5 students, then I'll offer to switch her officially to 10 am, and do Group 2 just myself, without a TA, but informally get Frank to mark the work of all 8 students in Groups 1,2). Taking classes: henry.martin@trinity.ox.ac.uk michael.andrews@wadh.ox.ac.uk, edward.jones@balliol.ox.ac.uk, oliver.holloway@mansfield.ox.ac.uk, bary.pradelski@maths.ox.ac.uk, martin.palmer@sjc.ox.ac.uk, edward.border@st-annes.ox.ac.uk, bernhard.elsner@st-annes.ox.ac.uk, kyprianou@maths.ox.ac.uk, matthew.schofield@lmh.ox.ac.uk, neil.pais@exeter.ox.ac.uk, julia.erhard@merton.ox.ac.uk, michael.jones@jesus.ox.ac.uk, benjamin.smith@lmh.ox.ac.uk, ----------- (Note: make sure Henry Martin is on my email list). Henry Martin (undergrad) Michael Andrews (undergrad) Edward Jones (undergrad) Oliver Holloway (MFoCS) Bary Pradelski (MFoCS) Martin Palmer (undergrad) Edward Border (undergrad) Bernhard Elsner (undergad) Christina Kyprianou (MFoCS) Matthew Schofield (undergrad) Neil Pais (undergrad) Julia Erhard (MFoCS) Michael Swarbrick Jones (undergrad) Benjamin Smith (undergrad) ----------- Also attending lectures, but not taking classes: Marcus Schofield (undergrad) Juan Caycedo (DPhil) David Sims (undergrad) William Anscombe (DPhil) ----------- Note: if admin objects to Class 1 and 2 having 4 students (minimum of 5?) I could offer to move one student from Group 2 to Group 1 (so that Groups 1 and 3 have at least 5), and for Group 2 (3 students) I could do without a TA (i.e. I could just enter myself as my own TA on minerva), so that no TA would have to be paid for Group 2. ----------- ----------- Dear Laura, Sometime over the next couple of days, please set up a box in the basement of the MI (and put it with all of the other boxes), labelled: Elliptic Curves, Group 3, Tutor: Prof Flynn, TA: Laura Schaposnik (work due Wednesday at 12 noon). The students will hand in the first problem sheet this coming Wednesday. Please mark it, giving each student grades (alpha+, alpha, alpha-, beta+, beta, beta-, gamma+, gamma, gamma-) for each question, as well as an overall grade. Enter these marks onto the minerva system (you can ask Frank Gounelas or Helen Lowe if you have trouble doing that). Please also write out the marks on a piece of paper, photocopy it, and bring this along (to give to me) at the beginning of the class, and of course bring along the marked work to the beginning of the class (to give to the students). Best wishes, Victor
