For Sheet 1: Mike Spenceley and Aashraya Jha presented questions. For Sheet 2: Andrea Jorga and Erin Hales presented questions. Note that in 2017/18 the likely TA's will come from the following: - Jamie Beacom (1 set): beacom@maths.ox.ac.uk or jamiebeacom@gmail.com - Nikolaos Athanasiou (2 sets): athanasiou@maths.ox.ac.uk I'll likely just have two sets of classes: 11:05 am to 12:30 pm (Nikolaos) and then 1:05 pm to 2:30 pm (Jamie), both on Thursdays of even weeks. Both have work deadline: 12 noon Tues. Note that I'll need to come about 15 minutes in advance to set up the room, using all tables, angled towards the corner with the boards: table for 3 at the back, then table+little-table for 4 in the middle and then another table+little-table for 4 in front, and then a final little-table for me; there are 11 chairs in the room, but can also bring a couple from the kitchen. So, I can cope with up to 12 students. Bring pens and cloth, clean board. It there needs to be a third class then likely 1:05 pm on Thursdays of odd weeks; Nikolaos says he could do that, except that he'll be away from Fri of Week 4 to Fri of Week 5, so the third class could either avoid that week or I could check if Jamie could cover that class in exchange for Nikolaos covering one of his in another week. Note that in 2016/17 the likely TA's will come from the following, who will TA for Elliptic Curves: - Juan Carlos Calvo Jackson (2 sets) [Thurs of odd weeks] - Federico Amadio (1 set) [Thurs of even weeks] Class 1. Tutor: Victor Flynn. TA: Federico Amadio. 1 pm, Thurs of Weeks 2,4,6,8. Room C3 of AWB. Work deadline: 1 pm on Tuesdays, to: AWB, Mezzanine hand in area. Class 2. Tutor: Victor Flynn. TA: Juan Carlos Calvo Jackson. 11 am, Thurs of Wks 3,5,7 of HT, Wk 1 of TT. Ground SR of 8 New College Lane. Work deadline: 5 pm on Tuesdays, to: AWB, Mezzanine hand in area. Class 3. Tutor: Victor Flynn. TA: Juan Carlos Calvo Jackson. 2 pm, Thurs of Wks 3,5,7 of HT, Wk 1 of TT. Ground SR of 8 New College Lane. Work deadline: 5 pm on Tuesdays, to: AWB, Mezzanine hand in area. I shall tutor all 3 sets. As of Aug 2016 there were 18 students pre-enrolled; there are 3 sets allocated to take into account likely visiting and MFoCS students. Imitate a similar schedule to last year: 2 sets in odd weeks (at NCL) and 1 set even weeks (Dept); get these all booked as soon as possible. Mention: upper limit of 8 for the odd week classes, but no limit for the even week class. To : calvojackson@maths.ox.ac.uk Cc : federico.amadio@maths.ox.ac.uk Subject : Re: Tutor and TA class allocation for C3.7 Elliptic Curves Dear Juan Carlos Calvo Jackson and Federico Amadio, Many thanks for offering to TA for C3.7 Elliptic Curves. There will be three sets of classes; I see that you have each said you could do up to two sets of classes. So, the first thing for you to decide is which of you prefers to do two sets and which of you prefers one set. Most likely there will be: (a) one set which is about 1 pm on Thurs of Weeks 2,4,6,8 of Hilary Term, (b) one set which is about 11 am on Thurs of Weeks 3,5,7 of Hilary Term and Week 1 of Trinity Term. (c) one set which is about 2 pm on Thurs of Weeks 3,5,7 of Hilary Term and Week 1 of Trinity Term. I guess that most efficient would be for one of you to do (a) and the other of you to do (b),(c). Best wishes, Victor Note: Federico will do (a), and Juan Carlos will do (b),(c). ----------- Looking ahead to Consultation Sessions in TT, note that, when I do the schedule of exam years for each week, avoid 2009 and 2011 since the solutions for 2009 and 2011 are already available to the students at: https://www.maths.ox.ac.uk/members/students/undergraduate-courses/examinations-assessments/part-c-specimen-solutions ----------- Note: my lectures are in L3 (note in diary); tell the students not to sit in the last 3 rows or the outer parts. Helen thinks that a C-room might be too small, with likely MFoCS numbers. I should check whether or not I might need a fourth class! (however, Danny said he can only do one class). I think that for the last few years, EC has been lectured in one of the classrooms. ----------- My current best plan for classes: I have kept the C2 (AWB) booking for even weeks (I have canceled the odd week bookings in the AWB and I have canceled the LR4 booking with Joan). In even weeks, use C2 in the AWB; start at 1 pm sharp and finish at 2:30 pm, when I'll see Robbie. In odd weeks, use 8NCL; ask Jessica if possible to keep the each odd week class to a max of 8 (if that's not possible then 3OB4 is a backup plan). I have 4 fold-up chairs, two whiteboards and two easels in the store room. If the odd-week class size is only slightly over 8, then bring over some fold-out chairs and arrange the tables in parallel, rather than an L shape. Also: ask Jessica, if possible, to give Robbie his preference of the even week class (so that I can see him for his Part C Dissertation immediately afterwards). Email addresses: Sebastian Eterovic Francesca Bianchi In summary: Class 1. Tutor: Victor Flynn. TA: Sebastian Eterovic. 1 pm, Thurs of Weeks 2,4,6,8. Room C2 of AWB. Work deadline: 4 pm on Tues, to: AWB, Mezzanine hand in area. Yik Chan UNI, Natasha Davey STA, Daniel Fess UNI, Luke Harvest NEW, Kristian Tokmakov MAG, Jack Violet MAN, Robbie Whittaker NEW. Class 2. Tutor: Victor Flynn. TA: Francesca Bianchi. 11:05 am, Thurs of Wks 3,5,7 of HT, Wk 1 of TT. Ground SR of 8 New College Lane. Work deadline: 2 pm on Mon, to: AWB, Mezzanine hand in area. Andrew Kirk QNS, Alice Lattey CCC, Helen Morris STA, Kath Nicholls NEW, Samuel Rice WOR, Andras Sandor MFO, Oliver Verran BNC, Dennis Wang WOR. Class 3. Tutor: Victor Flynn. Yes, please also do the third room booking, so in total: 1-2:30pm. Thursdays of Weeks 2,4,6,8 of HT. In C2. 11am-12:30pm. Thursdays of Weeks 3,5,7 of HT. In C2. 12:30-2pm. Thursdays of Weeks 3,5,7 of HT. In C3. (note: this would mean slightly changing the time for the last of these, which I'd need to check with Francesca; if she couldn't adjust the time, she could arrive partway through at 1 pm). For New College options: 8NCL is a possibility, but a shortage of seating; I might ask Sue to have permanently 6 fold-up chairs (with the advantage that I wouldn't again have to ask for any), with the idea that I would carry them to 8NCL (and put the two big tables in parallel with the other table near the window pulled out slightly); alternatively I could buy some light fold-up chairs on amazon. I have also booked LR4 in New College, which is easily big enough, but has only a tiny whiteboard, so I would need to ask for several bigger whiteboards (probably I'll cancel this). Yet another alternative is 3OB4, where I have enough seating, but need more whiteboard space (which I could buy myself?, e.g. one more tripod and whiteboard of the same size as the current one). I might ask Jessica to cap the odd-week classes at 8 students, have those at 8NCL, and then the larger even-week class could be in the Dept (in which case I would keep the even-week booking and cancel the odd-week booking); in that case, check that the next booking for C2 is at 3 pm (rather than 2:30 pm), just in case a few students want to ask extra qns at the end. ----------- Note: lectures will likely be: Mondays 12 noon and Wed 11 am. There will be 3 classes (I shall tutor all of them). The following students have asked to TA: Francesca Bianchi x2 sets francescabianchi25@gmail.com Danny Scarponi x2 sets dannyscarp88@gmail.com (and they have emailed to confirm the below arrangements). Dear Francesca, The Dept administrator tells me that you have expressed an interest in being a TA for Elliptic Curves, which I shall be lecturing in 2015/16; I've noted you down for the two classes which will likely take place at 11 am and 2 pm on the following Thursdays: 11 am and 2 pm on: 4 Feb, 18 Feb, 3 March, 28 April (so, I would be the tutor and you would be the TA for these classes). Each class lasts about 90 minutes. There are normally about 8 students in each class, and they hand in their work to you a few days before each class, for you to mark and return to them at the class. During each class, the standard format is for me (as tutor) to go through most of the questions on the board, with you presenting one question. Of course, closer to the time I shall give you the 2015/16 versions of the materials (notes, problem sheets and the solutions to the problem sheets); the problem sheets will remain very similar to those used last year at: http://www0.maths.ox.ac.uk/courses/course/26325/material Please confirm that you are happy with all of these arrangements.
