[I am sending this to the Panel with the permission of Andrew Dancer] Dear Geometry+NT Panel, As you may recall from the meeting last term, the Number Theory group suggested a temporary cut from two Level C options (as exist this year) down to one Level C option in 2006/07 (with a "temporary gap" in the other term), and this is what went forward as the Panel's recommendation from that meeting. However, on reviewing our resources, we (the Number Theory group) feel that we can, after all, maintain our provision of two Level C Number Theory courses in 2006/07, and we would like to request to be allowed, after all, to do so. This means a few alterations to what was recommended by the Panel, namely: Part C Elliptic Curves (Victor Flynn) would be added in HT, and Roger Heath-Brown (not Victor Flynn) would lecture Part B Algebraic Number Theory in HT. In summary, the 2006/07 Number Theory provision in Parts B and C would be: Part C Analytic Number Theory (in MT), lectured by Roger Heath-Brown. Part C Elliptic Curves (in HT), lectured by Victor Flynn. Part B Algebraic Number Theory (in HT), lectured by Roger Heath-Brown. Is that o.k. with the Panel? As I understand it from Andrew and Glenys, we do not have to have a physical Panel meeting; it's o.k. to do it by meeting-by-email. A few supplementary comments: (1) Elliptic Curves is available as 4th-year-only, so this year's course is not available to current 3rd year students for exam. So, there is no wastefulness involved in offering it again next year. (2) I have also done a careful summary of people available to tutor and TA next year, and have checked that we also have the resources to cover the tutoring and TA-ing of the associated intercollegiate classes for these lecture courses. - Victor Flynn
