Files are as follows. [N.B.: preliminaryreading, lecturenotes, sheet1,...,sheet8 are for putting up on the webpages; the others are for private use] preliminaryreading.tex This is for the students to read ideally in advance of the start of the lecture course; it contains the main material needed as prerequisites from Algebra, Analysis and Geometry. I normally put it up on the webpage at the end of MT and arrange for an email to be sent to all Part C and MFoCS students to let them know about it. There is a sheet (Sheet 0) included in this document, which is just intended for the private use of the students as their own check to see if they understand the preliminary reading; it is not intended to be handed in nor to be discussed during any intercollegiate class. No student has so far ever asked or emailed any questions to me about Sheet 0. lecturenotes.tex These are the lecture notes I normally put on the webpage at the beginning of HT (roughly: 3 pages corresponds to 1 lecture). sheet1.tex, sheet2.tex, .... , sheet8.tex These are the problem sheets for the lecture course (note: they are in plain tex rather than latex). Sheets 1,...,7 are to be handed in for intercollegiate classes in Weeks 2,...,8 (note, I normally arranged lectures for early in the week and classes for later in the week, so as to maximise the number of lectures completed before each class). Sheet 8 is a revision sheet for the students to use in TT (it has some exam-style questions, as well as the actual questions from previous years; I have already included the 2008/09 questions). I normally put all of these on the webpage at the beginning of HT. The first couple of sheets are fairly mechanical and are mainly just to get them fluent in using the group law and examples of torsion points of order 2 (useful for later in the lecture course) and order 3. -------------------------------------------- The following files are for private use: -------------------------------------------- notesbrief.tex This is fairly close to what I actually write on the board, that is, a slightly abbreviated version with some optional material either shortened or removed (roughly: 2 pages corresponds to 1 lecture, although I tended to get ahead by doing about 2.5 pages per lecture for the first 8 lectures and then have time to be more relaxed at 1.5 pages per lecture for the second 8 lectures). notesbriefcomments.tex This is the same as notesbrief.tex, except that I have added in italics some of the verbal asides used in lectures, and I have spaced everything out with a larger baselineskip. This is the document I took with me to each lecture. (roughly: 4 pages corresponds to 1 lecture). I found it helpful, after printing this out, to add (by hand) red brackets around the verbal asides, so that they were easy visually to distinguish from what is to be written on the board. sheetsolns.tex These are the solutions to the problem sheets (soln8.tex only has the solutions to the extra exam-style questions, since the solutions to actual past exam questions are anyway in the below files examsoln06.tex, ... , examsoln09.tex). sheetsolns.tex is in plain tex (so use: pdftex rather than pdflatex). exam06.tex, exam07.tex, exam08.tex, exam09.tex, exam10.tex, exam11.tex These are the examination questions from previous years. As you can see, I have felt free to mix topics within the same questions, in order to make sure that certain standard techniques always get included as parts of questions (such as finding ranks and finding torsion subgroups, which give a reward to students who have worked conscientiously) and so that also a reasonable spread of topics gets overall represented. Two of the questions are a mixture of bookwork and problem-solving (not necessarily with any connection between the bookwork and problem-solving parts), and the other questions is problem-solving only (with no bookwork). I always request "calculators allowed" for this exam (mainly for any crypto question), which means sending a reminder in advance to the Chair of Part C Examiners. That needs to be confirmed each year. These are timed exams: the students have a choice of 2 questions out of 3 (it was previously a choice of 2 questions out of 4, but was recently changed to be 2 questions out of 3, in order to encourage them towards covering the whole syllabus). It should be designed so that each questions conmfortably takes 45 minutes. oxmathex.sty This is the style file for the examinations (that is to say, when you latex the exam files, the file oxmathex.sty should be in the same directory). examsoln06.tex, examsoln07.tex, examsoln08.tex, examsoln09.tex, examsoln10.tex, examsoln11.tex These are the solutions to the examination questions. mfocsEC08.tex, mfocsEC09.tex, mfocsEC10.tex These were the MFoCS mini-projects for the years 2008,2009,2010 (note: 2006 was the same as 2008; 2007 was the same as 2009, following the rule that it shouldn't be the same project two years in a row). Note: you are allowed to re-use an MFoCS mini-project from a previous year, just not allowed to use the same one two years in a row (so you just need to check with Roger which one he uses in 2011/12 and avoid using that one in 2012/13). They are done at home by the MFoCS students during the Easter period, and are designed to have some portions which are open ended, allowing them to be creative.
