Welcome to the Mechanics of Soft Materials website! We are an interdisciplinary group that uses a mixture of theory and experiments to study how soft materials behave - in particular why they behave very differently to classical 'hard' materials.

At the moment, we are researching areas such as:
How droplets wet soft surfaces, and how you can use them to make neat patterns.

The mechanics of soft composites such as biological tissues and gels: why making holes in soft solids can, oddly, make them stiffer.

Adhesion in soft solids, and why traditional contact mechanics doesn't work when you get too soft.

The freezing of colloidal suspensions - or how potholes form.
