The Abram Gannibal Project: Visitor Programme 2021-22

Applications are sought from Sub-Saharan African mathematicians to visit the United Kingdom for research visits lasting 1-4 months under the Abram Gannibal Project. The visits should aim to establish collaborative research in applied algebra, algebraic geometry, number theory or topology with one of the UK mathematicians listed below. Prior contact with a person on the list is desirable but not essential. A list of projects that can be pursued can be downloaded here; applicants can also propose their own projects that fit within the subject area.

UK Project partners

  • Hamid Abban, Loughborough University, algebraic geometry and its applications
  • Agnese Barbensi, University of Oxford, applied topology
  • Heather Harrington, University of Oxford, applied algebra and topology
  • Diane Maclagan, University of Warwick, algebraic geometry
  • Ambrus Pal, Imperial College London, number theory
  • Gregory Sankaran, University of Bath, algebraic geometry
  • Balazs Szendroi, University of Oxford, algebraic geometry
  • Michael Wemyss, University of Glasgow, non-commutative algebra and algebraic geometry

Eligibility conditions: applicants should hold a doctorate in algebra, algebraic geometry, number theory, topology or a closely related mathematical discipline, and should be employed at a Sub-Saharan African University.

Length and timing of visits: 1-4 months during the period October 2021 to March 2022.

Funding available: the funds will cover all travel costs, as well as accommodation and subsistence while in the UK. A small per diem will also be available.

Application materials: applicants should send the following materials: a CV including a list of publications and the names of two academic referees; a description of a project (at most two pages) to be pursued, indicating the name of the mathematician the applicant is proposing to visit, the length of visit, as well as prior experience of the applicant in the proposed line of research.

Application deadline: there is no strict deadline, but applications arriving by 20 August 2021 will be evaluated first.

COVID quarantine requirements: The visits will have to adhere to all legal requirements of entering the UK. It is expected that this will involve some time spent in quarantine; successful applicants will get detailed advice about the precise conditions of a visit.
