Industrial Mathematics Group

Ian Griffiths

I am a Professor of Industrial Mathematics in the Mathematical Institute at the University of Oxford. I am a Professorial Fellow in Industrial Mathematics and the Janet Dyson Fellow at Mansfield College. I have a collaborative network with Howard Stone and the Complex Fluids Group at Princeton, and the Laboratory of Fields, Flows, and Interfaces at Toronto Metropolitan University. Prior to my current position I was a Royal Society University Research Fellow. (Photograph credit: John Cairns.)

Our group

Doctoral researchers

Grace Curtis

is a second-year DPhil student exploring the behaviour of flexible fibres in the context of industrial settings such as sea-cable laying, filtration and fibre optics. Grace is co-supervised by Dominic Vella.

Torin Fastnedge

is a third-year DPhil student working on modelling microplastics and microfibre filters in washing machines. This project is in collaboration with Beko. Torin is co-supervised by Chris Breward. (Photograph credit: John Cairns.)

Orson Hart

is a first-year DPhil student working on chill ripples arising in glass products. He is co-supervised by Chris Breward and Peter Howell.

Georgina Ryan

is a first-year DPhil student working on ionocaloric devices. Georgina is co-supervised by Mohit Dalwadi.

Nicholas Ryan

is a third-year DPhil student working on modelling the manufacture of glass sheets. He is co-supervised by Chris Breward and Peter Howell.

Postdoctoral researchers

Matthew Shirley

is a postdoctoral researcher studying the manufacture of fibre optic cables in collaboration with by Fibercore. Prior to this, Matt worked in collaboration with Virustatic to investigate the performance of a new face mask filter that wraps around the face to offer superior filtration performance. Matt is co-supervised by Chris Breward and Peter Howell.
